H-SPECPOL

The Special Political Committee (SPECPOL), the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, was established to consider special geopolitical issues concerning world society. Tasked with managing issues that sit at the intersection of sovereignty and international law, SPECPOL has historically served as the platform where the world’s most sensitive territorial and administrative shifts are overseen.

Years of tension between the Arab nations and Israel have finally boiled over into a lightning-fast conflict. While Israel has made great strides in the Sinai and West Bank, it is the capture of East Jerusalem that has caught the international community off guard. As the city reunifies under Israeli control for the first time since 1948, the United Nations finds itself facing its greatest challenge to date: what to do with a city claimed by three of the world's major religions, and two of the warring nations. The war may be quick, but the question of Jerusalem is only just beginning.

In this committee, delegates will simulate discussions upon June 1967's centre of political turmoil. As the Six-Day War progresses and borders of the Middle-East are being redrawn, delegates are to debate and resolve the region's climactic concern: East Jerusalem's possession.
